Minty Fresh

May 20, 2012

We all know that this is the hot color that has been touted since winter as the one to have included in your wardrobe.  But has anyone noticed the dark horse color (reference to the racing weeks!) that has quickly been gaining popularity?  This is it, mint green.  It is a beautiful color.  And to take it one step further, many times we are seeing the colors being paired with lovely outcomes.  Below are a few items in mint that might just need to be in your closet:)

This is a really sweet tank that would look great with white jeans and neutral flat sandals.  The bottom is sheer so I would certainly add a cami, a strapless one (yes, they are available), would work well to keep the back view, which is a bit of a racer cut, looking clean.  Obviously this cutie went with the sheer look but even in your 20′s I wouldn’t recommend it. Note the simple chain…keeping the vibe kinda boho.

The sandal below has some wonderful summer features.  A great color…yes, it’s a bit darker than mint but still in that family, simple lines to complement your foot, and a very smooth, natural woven, low heel.  The silver rectangle is an elongating feature and will aid in slenderizing your foot if is wider than you’d like.  Love this little sandal.  So feminine.

This dress is absolutely beautiful.  It’s a classic cut in a beautiful shade of green.  Constructed of a wool/silk blend which will wear beautifully.  Don’t worry about the wool, it’s a “tropical weight” wool which is really just “summer weight”.  I do believe I want this dress, badly.  The site says “low on stock”.  Act quickly. And btw, this dress shape is almost a must have in your wardrobe.  It’s an ageless cut and usually very flattering.

Here is an example of the two “it” colors paired up in a geometric necklace.  I love the modern look going on.  In fact, check out etsy for several great buys in jewelry.  Really cool site.

Geometric necklace/ etsy.com/ $19.00

I hope you enjoy this summer shade, it’s really one of my favorites….it works wonderfully with navy, black, white, gray…..so many options.  Even denim.  Why don’t you give it a try?

Have a wonderful week!  Please call for any wardrobe needs you may have,

Your Spring Break Beach List!

February 27, 2012

When my children were younger, we went back and forth between snow skiing and beaching it.  I think I can safely say, the guys in the group enjoyed the slopes the best and the girls would choose the beach 9 out of 10 times.  My skiing days are behind me, I think, and Destin and Anna Maria Island are my go to spring break destinations these days.  That’s if I get a spring break!  But, even if I don’t get to go, many, many, many of you will go in my place:)  So, for you lucky ones, here are some things I would pack if I were going.

I love this bag.  I’d take it on the plane, shopping, to the beach, really anywhere I would need to go on a beach vacay.  But, I think it would be cutest by the pool or in your chair at the beach.  I think the design looks a bit like shark fins, teeheehee.  This designer has hit the jackpot….she makes these out of recycled umbrellas!  What’s not to love?  Good for the earth? Yes.  One of a kind? Yes.  Easy to clean?  Yes.  Cute as all get out?  Yes.  This was the most chic I thought.  The prices were generally under $100.  Check out her website.

If we’re talking about the beach, and it’s my clan going, there’s just not much opportunity for dressing up.  We’re in our bathing suits, shorts, and tees most of the time.  But, on occasion, we do like to spiff up a bit.  And the perfect way to do that at the beach is a maxi.  It can be cool in March at many beaches.  This is a great way to cover up with style!  Black background with white stripes giving it a definite nautical feel….a white rope belt is the cherry on top.  I really like that it’s not clingy.  A red sandal would make this little dress just about perfect.

Maxi/ Calvin Klein/ Nordstroms, $98.00

Next up….the shorts you will spend the week in, if you were me.  These are not Daisy Dukes.  These are perfectly appropriate, good ol’ denim shorts for all ages.  Of course, you can probably find them at Gap, J Crew, Target; take your pick.  They don’t have to be name brand,  just make sure the inseam is close to 5+ inches (unless you’re petite) for going out in public.  Much shorter and you may as well wear your bathing suit. Tees, tanks, cute little floral tops, long sleeve button up shirt, tunics, and more are what you’ll be pairing these with for beach casual style.  The little fray at the pocket hips it up some.

Denim short/ Kut from the Kloth/ Nordstroms, $54.50

If you are the “out to dinner every night” kind, this is your second option.  What can’t a white denim do?  Not. One. Single. Thing!   I’m talking about a straight leg jean; crops, capris and skinnies are a different animal.  Any top you choose to put with these will almost always look fabulous.   These from Citizens are great with an 8″ rise.   Love.

White denim straight leg/ Citizens of Humanity, Ava, piperlime.com/ $184.00

For the perfect little top to go with the white jeans or denim shorts, try one like this ever so fashionable tank from J Crew.  It also comes in camel and either color would just be absolutely wonderful.  Great for warm sun and when the sun goes down wrap a pink, brown, red, black, or really any color you choose, around your shoulders.  And a great price to boot!

Navy leopard tank/ J Crew/ $39.50

With all the time spent at the pool or beach, you’ll need a cover up.  And of course it should be fabulous.  What I’ve been doing for years is a sarong or pareo.  I think I have 4 and do believe I need another!  It’s multi-functional and so very chic looking for tying above the bust or low on the hips. I also use mine as a pillow on the sand or chair, to wrap up in when it gets cloudy and cool, to cover those parts that have gotten just a little too much sun and so much more.  Make sure you get a big one.  The one below is beautiful. It is 70″ x 42″ and if you click on the picture can see it is ankle length when tied at the hip. It is from puawear on etsy.

Hand-dyed batik print green jungle print pareo/ puawear, etsy.com $35.00

Obviously, there are so many more things you need….but hopefully, this will give you a start and inspire you to look at your spring break wardrobe with a creative eye.  Beach vacations are a time to loosen up and play around.  Do it with your wardrobe too.  If you need help pulling a wardrobe together and don’t have the time or energy, give me a call.  I’d love to help.

Cold Temps and Thoughts of Spring Fashions

January 20, 2012

This post is so late…I took a trip to Asheville with extended family so of course, no blogging then.  Just food, fun, family, and a fire going non-stop!  Wonderful.  Then my computer thought it should just wig out for a while…very weird and not wonderful.  But, it has been scanned and hopefully fixed and here I am.  Glad to be on the job!

Last week before I left for the mountains, I was kindly invited to Belk’s Spring Preview.  Arlene Goldstein their fashion forecaster, went over Belk’s view of the upcoming season.  They had some great thoughts and fun items picked out to represent their take on Spring 2012.

Reading about the shows last fall, Belk seems to be right on target.  BIG pops of color will be a hit.  The color tangerine will be a major factor, it has slowly been inching forward for a couple of seasons now.  Laid back Americana clothing, denim and nods to western flare are staying strong.  And shoes will still make or break an outfit!   Color is evermore important here with so many shades on the color wheel shown on straps, toes, heels etc.  For ladies with aching backs, fatter, stacked heels are being shown more and more.

Below I have some pics from Belk’s media layout (except the tote).  I have picked my favorites.

Ok, Belk’s highlight here is supposed to be the lace shirt, and I agree, lace will be a major factor with spring styles.  But listen gals, if you want to be on trend and up to date this season, colored denim is the way to go.  I don’t think they will stick around for years but it’s not a quickie fad either.  I’d feel safe spending a few bucks on some.  So fun!  Try red ones and black flats with a black turtleneck right now and switch to black sandals and a white top later to keep it simple and classy.   Although these pink ones are awfully pretty!  And unless you’re 25 or so and under lose the back pocket distractions!

Miss Me Pink skinny jean, $99.00 Willow & Clay crochet knit top, $98.00

The next pic is what they describe as American original….I call it nautical.  Soooo Hamptons, or Nashville, hehehe.  While this is very unassuming, I do like it for its chic factor.  No wondering what you were trying to convey here…simple yet lovely.  And this blouse would pair perfectly with so many other items.   Shoes?  Would a red pump be too literal….if so, go for neutral.

Jones New York Signature White sleeveless blouse, $69.00 Dot pencil skirt, $99.00

Remember I said BIG pops of color?  Imagine a subtle black, grey, white…pick your color, fairly monotone outfit then bam!  This big ‘ol blue tote.  What a statement.  And done very simply.  So, if your wardrobe consists of drabness, and I hope it doesn’t, consider a bold color in a bag or a pair of shoes.  Maybe a belt or jewelry would be enough for you.  Just try something.

Steve Madden tote/ $198.00/ nordstroms

And lastly, here’s an example of those fatter heels I was referring to.  I think these are a bit of a fad but if you must have the latest, this is an example;  although I wouldn’t replace all my shoes with some like these.  They are cute though!  But now, that tangerine patent toe flat and silver stripe, I could wear those everyday…..classic overtones with a color twist.  Love. it.

Calvin Klein "Pash" patent toe dress flat in beige, $99.00 "Blaine" metallic toe dress pump in beige, $109.00

I want to thank Arlene at Belk for inviting me to their showing.  It was a treat and certainly got me pumped thinking about spring.  What do you think, do you have any favorite trends you see for the upcoming warmer weather?  Let me know…I love feedback!

In reference to my last post, if you want to plow through some sales and the ever dropping prices let me know.  Surgeries are over so I’m ready to roll and have clients calling regularly.  Hope to catch up with YOU soon.  Thanks for reading….

Marti and Liz-a-palooza

August 15, 2011

I do love a deal.  I must confess,  I am a total sale scrounger.  You put me in a room with dramatically reduced clothing or shoes, and well, you might as well get some reading material ’cause I’ll be a while.  My last dress was purchased at a consignment store.  Having worked in retail, been a buyer,  plus being able to sew, the mark-up on stuff  just really gets to me.  Cheap fabrics, no lining, asking the same for vinyl and leather…..arrrrggghhh!  Anyway, such thoughts were the inspiration for this post.  I’m sure the sales ladies in Marti and Liz wondered what the woman in the  shorts and keds (yep, didn’t even look like a stylist for sure!) was doing taking pictures of their shoes.  I probably should have told them, oh well.

If you are not familiar with Marti and Liz, it is a chain of stores that sell factory rejects, overstock, runway, and returned shoes.  There is one in Cool Springs and Murfreesboro and maybe somewhere else close to Nashville.  Some shoes are obviously brand new, some have obviously been worn.  By who I’m not really sure.  I steer clear of pairs that have obvious wear and tear.  But, it is safe to say I can generally find a purchase there, it might not have been what I was looking for but I sure do need them anyway!  The fabulous part is, they carry really great name shoes…..you just may not see them all the time or they may not have your size.  Frye, Donald Pliner, Cole Haan,  Coach, Anne Klein, Kate Spade, Nine West, and more.

So, below are what I found on a late Wednesday afternoon.  I walked out not buying (remember, I just bought a dress!), but thinking about those cute clogs!!

One minor disclaimer, sizes are not “for sure”.  I was terribly remiss in not writing down all the info.  I do know, unless otherwise stated, all shoes were in the $24.99 to $27.99 range.

The first pair are just fabulous.   The heel is a great height, this color will work so cute now and definitely go into fall, you know when you want a sandal but feel it’s too late in the season?  This is your shoe and please tell me what this color WON’T go with!!  I believe these were a size 8 and the brand Moda.

beige suede heel

Calling any size 6 1/2 that needs a fantastic black pump.   So very versatile.  The metallic shine kicks it up 2 or 3 notches, don’t ya think?

black metallic Calvin Klein pump

Take any khaki, black, navy, denim, and possibly subtly patterned pant (probably not brown), a cute top, and pair with these shoes and I’ll show you one great outfit.  Just love the little gold bow and shiny beads on the toe.  I know  Sam Libby shoes and Sam Edelman shoes so this brand must be a company step child.  Yes, the people in the picture were watching me strangely.

snakeskin flat with gold toe

Oh. My. Gosh.  If you are a size 6-6 1/2  and don’t want these shoes I don’t know what’s wrong with you.  There isn’t one more fashion trend that has been bigger lately than wooden platforms.  These are the perfect transition sandal….put these with any denim you please and wear with pleasure.   A Nine West hit.

cutest black clog sandal ever

Um, yes, I did say Cole Haan.  What?  How much?  $59.99.  Yes, that’s what I said.  These boots are just fabulous….they hit a little lower on the calf, you know, that new cool boot shaft height.  They are brown with just the tinge of gray.  I know for a fact they had a handful in a variety of sizes.  I also know for a fact these 7 1/2′s are gone ’cause my best friend bought them.  Sorry.

Cole Haan flat boot with buckles

Had these shoes been  a 1/2 size up, they would be mine.  So, if you are an 8 1/2 they should be yours.  They were comfortable and around $26.99.  To find a shoe this comfy, a great heel height and so unbelievably stylish is like winning the shoe lottery.  Please someone go buy these and wear them with almost every summer to transition outfit you have!  I love ‘em.  By the way, a picture of your own foot and hiding the other is hard to take.

fabulous neutral gladiator sandal

Lucky.  No, I’m not describing getting green lights all the way through Green Hills.  Lucky Brand, that’s who these clogs are by.  My size, a 9, for $34.99; in store they’d be $70-$80 dollars.  They were so comfortable.  I can just see these with a cute army green short skirt, bare legs,  and a long sleeve black tee this fall.  Or of course, your jeans and a turtle neck to a Friday night football game.  They should be mine.

the best clogs....ever

I took more pictures but I think this post is long enough.  Black slingbacks, Donald Pliner platform casual slip ons, and many more.  You’ve just got to go.  They get shipments on Thursday so late Thursday or early Friday are the best shopping times.  They open at 9 a.m. and close at 8 (maybe 9).  Now that I’ve sung their praises, I have just a couple of cautions.  All shoe styles do not come in all sizes.  For example, I think the shoe above I showed on my foot was the only pair, and this is true for most of the shoes they carry.  Secondly, as I mentioned, there will be very worn looking pairs.   I do not buy these, obviously I would advise you to keep your shoes NOT worn looking so I certainly wouldn’t buy a pair!  And thirdly, some pairs say “as is” on the bottom.  This means they may be mismatched by size, a slight color difference, a stud missing, etc.  Just thoroughly look over before you buy.  There is an exchange only policy.

Good luck, have fun, and call if you’d like me to go with you!!  Thanks for reading.
