The Long and Short of It

May 11, 2012

I had someone email and ask me to blog about how to wear maxi dresses and skirts so I thought that since they were such a fun summer piece to wear we’d look at some.

This is gonna be a brief post writing wise but lengthy because of pictures so you’ll get some good ideas.  Maxi’s have become a very popular item with all ages of women.  For summer they are a fun and flowy way to spice up an outfit without going “all” out.  And if spicing up isn’t on the agenda, a cute knit maxi skirt can be paired with a tank and go to the farmers market…. easy peasy.

A couple of things to think about when choosing….if you have a few body or age “issues” (i.e. love handles or maybe 50ish +) a straight skirt with no ruffles, tiers, or such, a solid color for sure, and hitting right around the ankle will be the easiest to wear one.  Keep the shoes flat or a very minimal heel for a breezy, warm weather feel.  It doesn’t have to just be a sandal, a closed toe works too.  If you want to take it a step up, a casual wedge or cute platform will keep the look fun.  You aren’t wearing an evening gown so ‘heels’ won’t fly.  A particular group of women to speak to are those that are in the plus size range.  Unfortunately, this group of gals are a difficult body type to pull this off.  I have seen a couple pictures that were ok but they are few and far between.  There is one below that would be a good one to try.

Let’s look at a some pics!

The easiest way to do it.  Simple lines with a nice side vent for that blowy feel.  Flat thongs and a stripe tee.  If you don’t want to tuck, make sure your top isn’t too long.  A top skimming the body and hitting at the top of the hip bone should be just about right.  This skirt has light pleating at the top, you don’t want a tee shirt pressing them down.  And the best thing about this skirt is the fabulous back, a little piece of black elastic and visible zipper.  Cute detail.  I couldn’t download that pic so click and see for yourself!

coral maxi/ Vince Camuto; Nordstroms/ $79.00

A step up….we’ve added pleats and a lovely blouse, more going on visually but still warm weather appropriate. This will take you to dinner, a poolside luncheon, and downtown on Friday night for wine and to hear some great music!  I’d even wear it to church.  My fave of what I researched.  I need this blouse.

If you are sticking your proverbial toe into the maxi world, this is a good start.  Basic black (or my preference would be navy:)), nice hang to the fabric, flattering cut.  If showing your arms is too “out there” for you, you’ll need a gauzy lightweight cardigan or something along those lines.  It can be tricky to do that with this style dress though.  So, maybe a pair of 5 lb. weights and some Jergens self -tanner?

Black maxi dress/ Soma/ 79.00

Well, just found this one at Target so maxi dresses with some type of sleeve are definitely available….I saw others I didn’t love.  But, this one is simple and easy to accessorize.  It could be a little low cut so a bright color cami would really pop.  Yellow, coral, and black are some options.

Bright blue maxi/ Target/ $24.99

Now for a couple pics showing how it can go all wrong.

Oh Eileen, what happened?  This is for sale at Nordstroms.  I’d like to know the reasoning behind that buyer’s decision!  Does anyone remember the brand Gunne Sax?   This could certainly be from that brand.  I’m trying hard to picture this being flattering in some way.  If anybody can see it, let me know.  Points for the cute wedges though.

Sundress tiered maxi / Eileen Fisher/ $248.00

Here’s another example in a skirt.  I guess Michael and Eileen collaborated on this look only he threw in some strange attempt at tye dye.  $100.00.  Really?  But, another great shoe.

Tiered/ruffled maxi skirt/ Michael Kors/ $99.0o

Ok, I’ve been making light of this prairie look but you know me; I will try my hardest to make something work.  So, here’s an example of this look working.  It can be done, but as you can see it’s a specific look and feel.  A definite boho vibe and the right pieces are a must.  For summer take away the plaid blouse and maybe the boots and just add flat sandals.  I really do like this look when it’s done right.  This skirt is currently out of stock.

Ruffled maxi/ Free People

I want to end on another winner and this one has some pizzaz…..the cut in shoulders is very flattering and it’s certainly an on trend print.  Fun dress!

Aztec print maxi/ Eliza J/ $158.00

I’ve shown mostly images with little writing, well actually, more writing than I meant to,  hopefully to inspire and answer my client’s question.  Nancy, I think you pulled yours off!  If you are in need of a stylish look for the weekend….this could be it.

Cold Temps and Thoughts of Spring Fashions

January 20, 2012

This post is so late…I took a trip to Asheville with extended family so of course, no blogging then.  Just food, fun, family, and a fire going non-stop!  Wonderful.  Then my computer thought it should just wig out for a while…very weird and not wonderful.  But, it has been scanned and hopefully fixed and here I am.  Glad to be on the job!

Last week before I left for the mountains, I was kindly invited to Belk’s Spring Preview.  Arlene Goldstein their fashion forecaster, went over Belk’s view of the upcoming season.  They had some great thoughts and fun items picked out to represent their take on Spring 2012.

Reading about the shows last fall, Belk seems to be right on target.  BIG pops of color will be a hit.  The color tangerine will be a major factor, it has slowly been inching forward for a couple of seasons now.  Laid back Americana clothing, denim and nods to western flare are staying strong.  And shoes will still make or break an outfit!   Color is evermore important here with so many shades on the color wheel shown on straps, toes, heels etc.  For ladies with aching backs, fatter, stacked heels are being shown more and more.

Below I have some pics from Belk’s media layout (except the tote).  I have picked my favorites.

Ok, Belk’s highlight here is supposed to be the lace shirt, and I agree, lace will be a major factor with spring styles.  But listen gals, if you want to be on trend and up to date this season, colored denim is the way to go.  I don’t think they will stick around for years but it’s not a quickie fad either.  I’d feel safe spending a few bucks on some.  So fun!  Try red ones and black flats with a black turtleneck right now and switch to black sandals and a white top later to keep it simple and classy.   Although these pink ones are awfully pretty!  And unless you’re 25 or so and under lose the back pocket distractions!

Miss Me Pink skinny jean, $99.00 Willow & Clay crochet knit top, $98.00

The next pic is what they describe as American original….I call it nautical.  Soooo Hamptons, or Nashville, hehehe.  While this is very unassuming, I do like it for its chic factor.  No wondering what you were trying to convey here…simple yet lovely.  And this blouse would pair perfectly with so many other items.   Shoes?  Would a red pump be too literal….if so, go for neutral.

Jones New York Signature White sleeveless blouse, $69.00 Dot pencil skirt, $99.00

Remember I said BIG pops of color?  Imagine a subtle black, grey, white…pick your color, fairly monotone outfit then bam!  This big ‘ol blue tote.  What a statement.  And done very simply.  So, if your wardrobe consists of drabness, and I hope it doesn’t, consider a bold color in a bag or a pair of shoes.  Maybe a belt or jewelry would be enough for you.  Just try something.

Steve Madden tote/ $198.00/ nordstroms

And lastly, here’s an example of those fatter heels I was referring to.  I think these are a bit of a fad but if you must have the latest, this is an example;  although I wouldn’t replace all my shoes with some like these.  They are cute though!  But now, that tangerine patent toe flat and silver stripe, I could wear those everyday…..classic overtones with a color twist.  Love. it.

Calvin Klein "Pash" patent toe dress flat in beige, $99.00 "Blaine" metallic toe dress pump in beige, $109.00

I want to thank Arlene at Belk for inviting me to their showing.  It was a treat and certainly got me pumped thinking about spring.  What do you think, do you have any favorite trends you see for the upcoming warmer weather?  Let me know…I love feedback!

In reference to my last post, if you want to plow through some sales and the ever dropping prices let me know.  Surgeries are over so I’m ready to roll and have clients calling regularly.  Hope to catch up with YOU soon.  Thanks for reading….

Little Bunny Foo Foo

April 20, 2011

Ok, the kids are set, hubby even has his new spring shirt and tie, but what about you?   Will it be last year’s outfit?  Or, will you do what I did years ago….I made, as in sewed, a white skirt on the day before Easter, then went out that evening and bought a sweater to go with it, then came home and finished sewing my toddler’s shorts and smocked top.   Please tell me NO ONE behaves that way anymore.  How crazy!!!  Even if you are single, sometimes the whole Easter/Passover outfit dilemma becomes just tooo much.  So today I’m here to try and make it a tad bit easier, maybe!

It’s already Wednesday and if you work out of the home or in, finding a dress or skirt and top plus shoes if needed, could be really time-consuming.  My plan is, most of us already own a black skirt right?  Why not pair it with a beautiful white blouse/top and a necklace of pearls, also a piece most of us have.  The ivory pearls will look beautiful against the white of the top.  The blouse needs to have great details or be constructed from a really fine fabric, plus fit nicely.  Then wear black pumps or sandals you already own, but if you have time and some extra moolah,  find a fabulous pair of sandals in a bright color to “pop” the outfit.  Red or bright yellow would give you some real oomph!

Below are a couple examples of really nice blouses that would work….I’d probably check the department stores before places like Banana Republic or Cotton Mill for the right one, you’ll have a larger selection.

It doesn’t have to cost this much!!  I hope you can see the lovely draping in the front….great for tummy disguising.

A.L.C. draped silk and jersey top/ $250/ net-a-porter.com

I also like this one, structured and sweet at the same time.  Plus blouses look fabulous on just about everyone.

Ralph Lauren "Loryna" ruffled blouse/ $98 (I think)/ Nordstroms

If you’d like to add a black belt for interest, go ahead.  Or if you have a white skirt and like the look above, I’m all for that too!

My last option for quick and limited shopping but at great prices is a consignment store.  I got 3 items at Designer Finds in Green Hills  just the other day.  A red,  strapless, cotton sateen dress with the same color embroidering ( really pretty) from Ann Taylor for $35.00,  a  navy blue lined in white cotton maxi skirt for $14.00, it’ll be great with flip flops or chunky brown platforms, and a J Crew paisley blouse for $24.  I saw some great spring wedding or Easter choices also.

I hope this helps a bit and makes your next few days less frantic.   With worrying about baskets and such, who needs the headache??

Happy Easter…… I hope your weekend is glorious!

Do White In Winter!

January 18, 2010

Okay, the weather is not cooperating with my posting.  So much for my last posting about the wet, dreary days of January.  In my defense, wearing white was a topic I was going to cover in a few days.  It’s just that now it is so pretty and warmer, it makes me think of lighter colors.  What is it about this weather that inspires me/you to clean, eat better, walk, and other healthy things?  Well, you can ponder that after you read the rest of this and let me know.  Hopefully after reading you’ll  be inspired to wear white or winter white no matter what the weather is!

I’m going to start with a winter essential, I think, but rarely worn right now.  A white jean.  This one is ankle length but, if you would feel more comfortable, get a regular length, bootcut or straight leg.  Or, for a cool sixties look try a wide-leg white jean…whoa….very mod!  Haven’t seen one but will look and let you know.  Anyway, if you choose to be a fashion “do”,  make sure your denim is heavy weight and  don’t do a whole summer look (i.e. summery sandals, light weight tops, etc.).  You want to keep your other pieces winter appropriate.  Wear boots, flats, chunky sweaters, layered tees, whatever.  With this particular pair, they are obviously great for boot tuckin’.  White denim might be hard to find for a 2 or 3 more weeks.

Vince skinny stretch jean/ Nordstroms/ $195.00

I have a skirt similar to this one but mine is truly a summer skirt and I get so many compliments on it.  I haven’t felt this fabric but it up close it seems to be a fairly heavy cotton and it is lined.  I would love to wear this with black tights and black pumps.  Maybe yellow on top or more cream.   I could also see a high neck blouse with it, kinda a Victorian vibe.  Oh the possibilities!

Aniseed cotton skirt/ Anthropologie/ $128.00

I’ve saved the best for last.  This is an ultimate “it” piece.  What you can’t see is that the back is total chiffon ruffles too.  I love this jacket.  Put a sweet blush colored tee underneath with a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans and ballet flats or maryjane heels.  Fab-u-lous!  I’ll take it in a 6 please, no occasion needed.

Chiffon ruffle jacket with chain trim/ Topshop.com/ $160.00

Of course, if none of these are possibilities for you, at least get a pair of cream cords or a great winter white sweater.  Wearing several shades of cream, white, and winter white is a beautiful look.  You’ll look like a walking snowy vision, whether it’s sunny or snowing!  And we will get cold again!  Call or email if I can help in any way……
